Lesley Storm

In a writing career that spanned forty-three years of the twentieth century, LS produced seventeen plays, eleven novels, seven film-scripts, and a volume of short stories. Many of her plays turn on the subjects of marriage and sexual relationships. They often focus on the effects of marital constraints on wives, or the social conventions of gender relations more broadly considered (including sexual morality and questions of fidelity). Many of her female characters suffer punishment for sexual or social transgressions. In the 1940s and 50s she also concerned herself with issues like religion, politics, and the civilian experience of war. Her plays have been praised for their pointed, sarcastic, and humorous dialogue, which brings comedy to dramatic situations involving personal and social frustration.
